Mizusawa, Oshu City
History of Nanbu Tekki
In the latter half of the Heian period, Kiyohira Fujiwara, who was in Toyoda-kan, Esashi-gun, started by inviting a founder from Omi Province (Shiga Prefecture).
It is said that this gradually went south and was transmitted to Haneda. The casting industry flourished in this neighborhood due to the easy availability of mold materials such as iron sand and charcoal from the Kitakami Mountains and quality sand and clay from the ruins of the old rivers of the Kitakami Mountains in Haneda.
The history of Nanbu Tekki in Mizusawa, Oshu City, which started in the latter half of the Heian period, and Nanbu Tekki in Morioka City, which started with a founder by the southern feudal lord in the Edo period, are different.
In the Meiji era, both areas became "Iwate Prefecture", and in 1959, the Iwate Prefecture Nanbu Tekki Cooperative Association was established. In 1975, it was certified as "Nanbu Tekki" as the first traditional craft of the country.
We have inherited the traditional technique of Nanbu Tekki, which has a long history, and craftsmen such as tea ceremony kettles and iron kettles are making it with all their might.
